Synapse in NM Magazine

Two Synapse Studio photographers are featured in New Mexico Magazine’s latest photo issue (January issue).  For those of you living in NM, be sure and pick one up.  Some genuinely eye grabbing photos this year.

Jory Vander Galien:

“The Departing Winter Storm”

On a rather windy, cold, and snowy morning, I finally saw the break in the clouds I was longing for.  The way the light fell through the clouds of the departing storm, it gave the impression the clouds were alive as the light bounced and gleamed.  The clouds were spinning and churning as they were departing revealing a snowy west slope of the Sandia Mountains (outside Albuquerque).

Corey Walker:

“Escaping the Statue”

It was almost as if the shadow on the church took on a life of its own in this early New Mexico morning.  This image was taken at St. Jude’s Church in San Patricio, NM.

* As a side note, last  year NM Magazine featured Corey Walker’s son Jude Walker, only to be followed by St. Jude the following year.  Two Judes in two years!  It would be tough to pull of a 3-peat.

Moonlight Flight

Another trip to White Sands, NM – soul enriching as usual.  Full moon – November, 2010

Paying Respects

My wife and I were visiting an old graveyard in White Oaks, NM.  She directed my attention to my son as he was doing this.  For a kid of his energy he actually stayed like this for a while.  Afterward when we went to check out the tombstone, we found it was of a little boy’s that had died at almost the same age my son was (within a couple months).

Yes It Is…

Beatles' Hymns…a piece of art.

My step-father Jon  is fairly active in his local church.  The church was about to heave this old hymn board when Jon said he would take it off their hands.

This picture speaks to his vision – thoughtfully shot by his son Chase.

And never missing the chance to dish out some Beatles, below is an odd little Beatles gem

Too Sick to Pray

Willie+Nelson+Nelson

If simple is beautiful this song is a Van Gogh.

This was originally written by guru Willie Nelson (this version
performed by Phosphorescent). I'm always struck by the the actual
"prayer" that Willie offers here when he starts talking about his
family and their prayers. He goes so long without talking to God, then offers up
a short little sentence that almost doesn't make sense yet its bustles
with years of heart...then he "reckons that's all Lord."
It gets me every time. If the words don't hit home just listen
to the simple progression of the guitar.

Polaroids

For all the advances modern photography brings I sure am enchanted by the look given by this Polaroid effect.  Personally, the poor exposure, muted colors, and often “botched” composition speaks volumes to the beauty of “imperfections.”  Here’s to the Imperfect!

…that is the question.

Synapse Photographer Chase Mitovich snapped this photo and titled it as such.  For me the image, along with the title, evokes a whole bowl of emotions …Any thoughts?

Zen Mule

fnhorses

I don’t necessarily consider myself a horse person but I have to say this “photo shoot” was one of the most grounding moments I’ve had in quite some time.  It was as if she spoke a thousand calming words.  Maybe I should start being a horse person…Click below to see larger versions.

Advice for My Little Tigers

w

My Kiddos

A place for me to “vent.”  Poetry, music, thoughts…I’ll start with a little poem I wrote for my beloved kiddos:

Advice for My Little Tigers

Take to the land
like your toes are hippopotami;
forceful and confident
and worried not about your looks.

Journey through the streets
like a cheetah would on skates;
diligent and swift
and worried never of your falls.

Jump into the skies
like a dolphin in a bow tie;
mindful and chipper
and worried rarely of your predators.

Join mankind
like a puppy with some manners;
unconditional and lively
and worried never of your keeper.
